Golden milk — or haldi doodh — is a warming Ayurvedic drink combining turmeric with milk and spices. In the Ayurvedic tradition it is considered particularly nourishing for Vata and grounding for Kapha, making it a fitting evening ritual as the days grow shorter in autumn and winter. The addition of black pepper is considered to enhance the absorption of curcumin, the active compound in turmeric.
Ingredients
- 500 ml whole milk (or oat milk for a dairy-free version)
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- ½ tsp ground ginger
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- Small pinch of ground black pepper
- 1 tsp raw honey (added off the heat — not to boiling liquid)
- ½ tsp coconut oil or ghee (optional, for richness)
Method
- Pour the milk into a small saucepan and warm over a medium-low heat, stirring regularly, until steam begins to rise — do not allow it to boil.
- Whisk in the ground turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper until evenly combined.
- Stir in the coconut oil or ghee if using, and continue to warm for a further 2 minutes, stirring gently.
- Remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool for 1 minute so the liquid is no longer boiling.
- Add the raw honey and stir until dissolved.
- Pour into two mugs, add an extra pinch of cinnamon on top if desired, and serve immediately.
Notes
- Ayurvedic tradition advises against adding honey to boiling liquids — always let the drink cool slightly before stirring it in.
- For a Pitta-balancing version, reduce the ginger to ¼ tsp and omit the black pepper.
- Coconut milk may be substituted for a richer, more grounding drink suited to cold Vata evenings.
