Cooked Apple as a Breakfast Starter

Why cooked apple?

Apple can be tangy and sour as well as sweet in taste and can be hard to digest raw 1st thing in the morning. How often I hear people say “I’m not hungry in the morning “. This is because your digestion is slow and sleepy at this time of the day. It needs a gentle kick start. Drinking a glass of warm water helps. The ritual of simple preparation is a mindful task to ground your thoughts and prepare for the day.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 apple [ Granny Smith] cored and peeled.
  • 2-3 whole cloves
  • Cinnamon stick if extra heat or sweetness needed

Preparation

  1. Choose a small saucepan. Add 1/2 cup water and bring to a boil on medium heat.
  2. Meanwhile, cut the apple into quarters. Remove the cores and peel the skins. Add peeled apples to hot water along with 2-3 cloves. You can add cinnamon for extra sweetness.
  3. After the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat, cover, simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy right away after the apples cool slightly.
  5. Drink the water with the apples or keep it and use in cooked soup or cereal, or as a natural sweetener in herbal tea. It is like a dilute apple juice.
  6. Pitta pacifying try it with pear instead.
  7. Kapha pacifying add cinnamon for heating spice.
